A High Rise at the Austin Proper by Mark Cravotta

With the children off to college, husband-husband newlyweds were feeling like empty nesters in their downtown Austin abode. Located in the residences at the Austin Proper, the 1,646 square foot condo was beautiful, but lacked the character and charm the couple loved. “The homeowners wanted a home that was purposeful – a home they could fully experience,” designer Mark Cravotta shares. “They prioritize artistry and craftsmanship, so many pieces throughout the home embody this, such as the marble end table in the living space that was handcrafted by a Brazilian artisan.”

Cravotta got to work blending the couple’s love of pieces with a story, purpose, high-design and craft with his impeccable eye for detail. He mixed the antique bar cart (inherited by the owner) with contemporary finds such as the Kelly Wearstler light fixture in the kitchen. Cravotta brought in plenty of seating, but each area is surrounded by art (such as the piece by the dining table which reminded the boys of themselves) and music. Example: the living space also doubles as a listening room, with boutique audio equipment sitting atop a unique M. Crow cabinet. There’s a chandelier from Urban Electric and a dose of pattern in a chic striped rug. 

The guest bedroom showcases a lovely vignette with vintage Paul McCobb chairs next to an antique table, while the primary bedroom is grounded by a 100-year-old rug that complements the modern furnishings. 

Finally, Cravotta used Phillip Jeffries wallcoverings to add some texture and pattern to the modern space. In the entry, it’s a wood-veneer covering, while the powder bath has a floral pattern with an antique mirror from 1st Dibs. Proof that expert layering (and inherent good taste) can take a glossy new build and make it feel collected, as if they’ve called it home all along.
