Zilker Contemporary: A Douglas fir and concrete house warmed with travel and green
Residence (interiors)Austin, TexasPublished Updated
Zilker Contemporary is a house in Austin’s Zilker neighborhood by residential designer Gregory Brooks, in Douglas fir and concrete with clean, cool geometry. Cravotta Interiors made it a forever home for a couple entering a new chapter.
The brief
The clients, two busy executives, wanted a calm retreat close to the city. They had accumulated decades of world travel and loved organic materials. They wanted something modern that still felt alive and grounded.
Scope
Interiors throughout: palette, rugs, textiles, furnishings and a custom desk for the study.
The design
Luminous green runs through the palette, warm and unexpected against the raw materials of the building.
Antique Sultanabad rugs and Moroccan textiles from the markets of Marrakech bring age and distance into a house built for the present. A custom walnut-and-steel desk anchors the study.
The rooftop terrace looks out to the downtown skyline. The whole house has the quality of a treehouse: up in the trees, sheltered and connected to the world outside without being exposed to it.
