Avenue H: Mark Cravotta’s own 1922 Hyde Park bungalow
Whole-house renovation (designer’s own home)Austin, TexasAvenue H is Mark Cravotta’s own home: a 1922 bungalow and casita in Hyde Park, Austin’s first planned subdivision. The house was built around a Burr Oak that was already old when the foundation went in. He has lived here with his daughters. It shows how he works when he is the client.
The brief
When the designer is the client, the house writes the brief. Avenue H had a history worth keeping and a tree that set the terms for everything around it. The approach: original elements stay, and considered additions sit alongside them. Nothing precious. Everything intentional.
Scope
Interiors for the main bungalow and a separate casita. In the main house: living room, den and TV room, dining room and bedrooms. In the casita: a living room, kitchenette and bedroom. Furnishings, art, antiques and color throughout both buildings.
The design
The living room mixes eclectic modern and antique pieces with art. The den and TV room are colorful, with more of the art collection. The dining room brings together art and antiques.
The casita works as a second, smaller house. Its living room repeats the mix of modern and antique furnishings, with a view through to the kitchenette. In the casita bedroom, a gold Egyptian chair anchors a vignette of art and objects.
Austin Monthly toured the house in its Fall 2014 home issue as “The Non-Glass House.” Avenue H holds its history lightly and wears thirty years of a life in design without showing the effort.
